Since 2016, Whitney Young Health and The RED Bookshelf have collaborated in encouraging literacy and a love for books with children throughout the Capital Region.
RED Bookshelves consist of a wide-range of gently-used donated children’s books that children can take home and add to their own personal libraries. Whitney Young Health has four RED bookshelves at our Albany Health Center and at our three school-based health centers at Giffen Memorial Elementary School, Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy and Sheridan Preparatory Academy.
In 2018, we saw a huge growth in the number of books taken home with a total of 8,043 books, with our Albany Health Center having the highest volume. The amazing staff at The RED Bookshelf made 124 visits to the bookshelves to keep them stocked with books. Check out the breakdown of the number of books taken at each Whitney Young Health site.
Whitney Young Health hopes to continue to grow the number of children taking home books in 2019! If you have any gently-used children’s book you would like to donate to these bookshelves, please contact our Development Office at 518-591-4472.
