To help children grow up with books and a love of reading, Whitney Young has partnered with the national pediatric literacy program, Reach Out and Read(ROAR), to provide age appropriate books to children at well-child visits, ages birth to five years old.
The Reach Out and Read Program derives much of its impact from the trust that parents place in pediatric primary care providers whose job it is to help their children grow up healthy. By having Whitney Young's providers offer age-appropriate advice on reading, and then reinforcing the importance of books in the home by giving the child a new book, we are able to emphasize the importance of developing early literacy skills. The Reach Out and Read Program at Whitney Young is coordinated by volunteers who are always looking for donations of new age appropriate books.
