Identify your risk for Diabetes!

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Did you know that of the 30.3 million adults with diabetes, 23.1 million were diagnosed, and 7.2 million were undiagnosed?

This week we have Molly Ward, RD, CDN, CDE, Whitney Young Health's Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator, wanting you to be on the lookout for diabetes through knowing the signs and symptoms.

Know the Risk Factors

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Family history of diabetes, including mother, father, brother, sister
  • Ethnicity: African American, Asian, Indian, Hispanic
  • Age: Over 45 years old
  • For women: A personal history of gestational diabetes or a baby over 9lbs at birth

Take the Risk Test

Take the risk test here.

After the test:

  • If you scored 5 or higher talk to your doctor about testing and ask to see a Registered Dietitian.
  • If your doctor diagnoses you with diabetes or prediabetes, ask to see a Certified Diabetes Educator for education on self-management.

Know How to Lower Your Risk?

  • If you are overweight focus on weight loss
  • Start exercising
  • Make healthier food choices
